Director’s Comments February 20, 2020

Great All State performances! Our program was very well represented in the Kentucky All State Bands again this year, with thirteen performers in the concert bands. Rick Clary (Florida State) and Emily Threinen (University of Minnesota) conducted the rehearsals and concert in Whitney Hall. The path to a seat in an all state chair is highly competitive; I’m very proud of everyone who was part of that process from the District band first cut through the final product in Louisville on February 8th.

KMEA Assessments: performance assessments for small and large ensembles are scheduled for March 7th {Solo and Ensemble), and March 20 (Concert Bands). Both are held at North Oldham High School. Our performance times on Friday, March 20th are 3:20 p.m. (Symphonic 11) and 6:40 p.m. (Symphonic I). We should think about providing a light meal between the two band’s performances. I don’t think either group will make it until we return home for food (well after 8:00 p.m. once Symphonic I does its sight reading).

Phi Beta Mu Invitational Concert Festival: Symphonic Band I will perform at Male High School on Saturday, March 14th in the Phi Beta Mu Invitational Concert Festival. We are currently scheduled to perform in the last time slot on the program at 4:00 p.m.; plan to leave mid-morning, lunch at Mall St. Matthews, then to Male HS to listen and perform.

Basketball Pep Bands: We have officially finished the regular season this week. The District athletic directors agreed to NOT invite pep bands to the District tournament this year (small accomodations at Trimble County HS was their reasoning). So, we will begin tournament travel with the Regional tournaments during the first week of March (Girls at Martha Layne Collins, Boys at Henry County). Tournament games are signed up for on a volunteer basis. We have to provide a truck/van to transport equipment for each game; school athletics pays for the buses.

Keeping up with stuff: for the students, nearly all things "band" are being posted on Google Classroom-theory assignments, announcements, schedules, etc.-along with Remind notices and eboard. Even attendance at after school rehearsals is being taken through the use of Google forms. Of course, this means if they haven’t joined the class in Google Classroom, they can’t check themselves in!

I forward any items you as parents need to have through the usual channels (booster email, Remind, etc.). It’s very important that you help your "scholar” stay current by asking them: "What’s going on with the band this week?" If they give you a blank stare, or reply "nothing", they probably haven’t bothered to look at the communication I’ve provided.

Spring Musical: I heard through the grapevine that our books are to arrive this week; after I see what instrumentation is called for, I’ll putupa signup sheet and a schedule of rehearsals.

Oldham County Community Band: please consider this performance/service opportunity for your student (or yourself)! Tuesday evenings, 7:30-9:30 p.m. at the OC Schools Arts Center.

CAPAA: the arts "academy" coming to the Arts Center in the fall of 2020…

Trip 2021: we MUST discuss this tonight! I have a couple of thoughts about potential trip ideas for the spring of 2021. The final decision to travel or not really should be made at the March booster meeting, as the trip must be approved by OCBE no later than the April meeting, and incoming/returning students and their families need to know what we’re doing before the end of the school year. I spoke with Ron Roth at the conference about my thoughts…

Thanks for all you do in support of this program. There is no way we could possibly succeed without your presence and contributions to the effort!
